GLMCA Scholarship Program
At its inception, the GLMCA established a scholarship program to assist promising students of music at the college level who show interest in the promotion and performance of male chorus music and possess an appreciation of personal, fraternal, and artistic harmony. The top award in the program each year, the Guy Stoppert Scholarship, is made available through the contribution of Guy Stoppert, a member of the Norton Male Chorus of Flint, Michigan. Other award values are subject to change as determined by the scholarship committee, based on funds available. Scholarships are available to full-time students enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program with a major in music (vocal or choral emphasis receives a preference). Candidates must be sponsored by a member chorus of the Great Lakes Male Chorus Association. This year's recipient is Kate Hyne who was sponsored by Lansing's Men of Orpheus. Kate attended Interlochen Center for the Arts. She is a past member of the Interlochen All State Choir, and Choral and Opperetta Program. As a member, she performed in the Operretta’s “Pirates of Penzance,” “Patience,” and “Iolanthe.” While at Interlochen she was also a member of the World Youth Honors Choir. She was then accepted to the Interlochen Arts Academy. Kate has been a member of the two-time Grammy Award winning Michigan State University Children’s Choir. With the children’s choir, she has performed Carmina Burana with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, and performed Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Kate's accomplishments include performing with the MSU Children's Choir in the world premiere of “Songs for Lada,” under the baton of Maestro Leonard Slatkin with the world renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which was recorded by Naxos. In her Senior year of high school, Kate was recognized by the Michigan Youth Arts Festival for her Soprano Solos at the State Vocal Solo and Ensemble. She will be attending the nation's leading music programs at Michigan State University College of Music for Vocal Music Education. Kate studies voice under Professor Richard Fracker, Area Chair of Vocal Arts at Michigan State University College of Music. Kate would like to extend her appreciation to Mr. Peterson and the Men of Orpheus in providing this generous scholarship and opportunity to further her love of music. |
